Torrentz was founded in 2003 and it has been a stable factor in the torrent community for over 13 years. With millions of visitors per day the site grew out to become one of the most visited torrent site.
According to web traffic analysis website Alexa, Torrentz.eu had a 186 global ranking, up 20 spots from last time. The website is currently ranked 28 in India, one of the highest rankings for the site in any other country. A quick search on the registration of the website and the location of its servers showed that the information is blocked.
The name of the person on whose name the website is registered is “Not Disclosed”. Only a technical contact is given, naming one – Karol Majewski. The prefix of the numbers given along with the name show that they originate from Poland. It is hard to say if the website is registered there, its servers based there, or everything given is a sham.
A few hours ago and without warning, Torrentz disabled its search functionality. At first sight the main page looks normal but those who try to find links to torrents will notice that they’re no longer there.The site’s user are no longer able to login either. Instead, they see the following message: “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”
Torrentz never stored a single torrent file itself but did have a take down procedure in place, allowing copyright holders to take down infringing links.
Not all rights holders were happy with the site. Both RIAA and MPAA have reported the site to the U.S. Government, which repeatedly placed it its annual “Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets.”
Torrentz was founded a few weeks before The Pirate Bay and it was one of the oldest torrent sites still around. When Torrentz first came online the site was hosting torrent files, but it swiftly reinvented itself as a meta-search engine, the biggest of its kind.
